Fine motor skills are the small, precise movements of the hands and fingers, the skills behind holding a pencil, using scissors, doing up buttons and turning pages. They rely on hand strength, coordination and control, and they take years of playful practice to develop.
So much of a school day depends on the hands: writing, drawing, cutting, opening lunchboxes, managing belongings and getting dressed for sport. When these skills are still developing, tasks can feel tiring or frustrating, which can affect confidence and participation.
